Personally I'm a HUGE fan of pies. Chocolate being one of my all time favorites! This egg free chocolate pie is made from scratch, and is ALWAYS a hit among everyone who tries it! No need to stress out about dessert when you can make it days or weeks in advance with this recipe!
What is Chocolate Pie?
Chocolate Pie is exactly as it sounds. A delicious pie crust filled with chocolate – either rich chocolate layers or chocolate Jello Pudding.
For this recipe, we skip the boxed pudding and create a decadent chocolate lovers dream pie that uses only 5 ingredients and is impossible to mess up! Trust me, I've tried!
The other great aspect of this pie is that it's egg free! So if you need an egg free chocolate pie, this is the recipe for you!

What Kind of Chocolate is used for Chocolate Pie?
For this pie, you'll want to use Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips which will in turn create two chocolate layers. The bottom layer is a dark chocolate ganache.
The second layer is a semi-sweet chocolate layer and the top layer is a whipped cream layer. When all three layers are combined, you'll get the perfect chocolate flavor that isn't too sweet or bitter!
Remember, the higher the quality of chocolate, the better the end flavor will be. A high quality chocolate will give this pie a more velvety texture as well as a richer flavor. A lower quality chocolate will taste more waxy and offer less flavor overall.
What Kind of Crust for Chocolate Pie?
Chocolate Pie Can can be made with a variety of pie crusts. The crust you go with will be based on what your favorite is!
- Oreo Cookie Crust – If you want to keep the chocolate theme going, then put your chocolate layers in an Oreo cookie crust! Tastes great and you can never go wrong with an Oreo crust!
- Graham Cracker Crust – I'm always up for a good graham cracker crust. It's buttery crumbly crust will go great with these chocolate pie layers!
- Butter Pie Crust – Traditionally this is the crust I like to go with for this crust. It gives off a more traditional look with a classic pie crust but also offers up those flaky layers that can easily be found in a good pie crust.
How Do You Make Chocolate Pie?
This easy chocolate pie requires a stove, freezer and five Ingredients.
- Prebake Pie Crust. If using a graham cracker crust, bake for only 5 minutes to set.
- Place chocolate chips and heavy cream in a double boiler on the stove. If you don't own a double boiler, then place chocolate chips and heavy cream in a metal or heat proof glass bowl over a small pot of water.
- Melt chocolate and heavy cream until a thick ganache is formed. Pour this into the bottom of your pie crust and FREEZE.
- White crust is freezing, make second layer. Place more chocolate chips and heavy cream into double boiler or in a bowl over your pot of water and cook until creamy and smooth. Set aside or place in freezer to chill quickly – you want the temperature to come down to room temperature..
- While chocolate mixture is cooling, whip heavy cream until soft peaks form.
- Once chocolate is cooled, add whipped cream to chocolate and blend.
- Pour this chocolate mixture on top of your first dark chocolate ganache layer in crust. Freeze again.
- In a new bowl whip heavy cream and sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread on top of the pie and freeze until ready to serve.
- Thaw pie before serving.
PRO TIP: Make sure your pot of water is SMALLER than your bowl. Your bowl should sit ON TOP of the pot, with the base of the bowl sinking slightly into the pot. However you do not want your bowl touching the water at all.
Can You Add Too Much Chocolate (Or Cream) to your Chocolate Pie?
I've made this chocolate pie filling recipe many times over the years. However I still forget exact amounts of the ingredients every time. Because of this, I've been known to wing it sometimes. Name a small mistake you could make in the preparation process, and you can bet I've made it!
I've added too much of one ingredient and not enough of another. I've accidentally made it with only two layers instead of three. I used dark chocolate and milk chocolate by mistake instead of semi-sweet chocolate.
But here's the best thing about this easy to make chocolate pie—you just can't mess it up. Believe me, I've tried! This pie still turns out amazing EVERY SINGLE TIME. Unless you start adding in a ton of ingredients that aren't in this recipe, there's no way you can create a non-delicious mistake.
Can You Add Other Flavors to This Pie?
Of course! When it comes to playing with this recipe, go right ahead and experiment with different kinds of chocolate chip flavors to create a variety of easy chocolate pie fillings. You can't go wrong with a decadent dark chocolate pie, or even a sweeter milk chocolate pie! But my favorite is this combination of chocolate layers.
When playing with flavors you could even swap the vanilla for mint or peppermint extract for a chocolate peppermint or grasshopper pie!.
However, do you know what the best part about making this chocolate pie filling from scratch? It is the freedom to experiment with all kinds of flavor combinations. A flavor tweak won't hurt your pie.
How Do You Know When a Chocolate Pie is Done?
One of my favorite things when making this pie is that it's a make-ahead pie! Because of this, you don't have to worry about baking it at all.
You'll know when your homemade chocolate cream pie is done when the filling is cold and firm, rather than warm and soft (unless you like it that way). It's best to let the filling thaw for 30 minutes to an hour before you serve it to your friends and family.
Does Chocolate Pie Need to be Refrigerated?
Yes, this chocolate pie does need to be refrigerated when not being consumed. Because it's a chocolate mousse pie, it is predominantly whipped cream. Thus, the warmer it gets the softer it gets. So when not being eaten, it is best to keep it in the fridge or freezer, covered.
Will This Pie Stay Fresh if I Have to Travel?
If you want to bring this pie to a party or other get-together, make sure the pie is nice and frozen. Then place it in a cooler as you travel to keep it chilled – especially in the summer or warmer months.
If you're traveling long distances, and the pie thaws and softens, no worries. Just pop it in the freezer when you get to your destination. If you're going for a short distance, the pie will do just fine!

Ingredients
- Prepared single 10 inch (or deep dish) pie crust
- 1/3 cup + 1/2 cup + 1 cup + 1 cup heavy cream (You'll need a QUART of heavy cream, not a Pint! Almost 3 cups of Heavy cream! ~ Trust me, TOTALLY worth it!)
- 3/4 cup + 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- Chocolate shavings
Instructions
- If pie crust is not ready, bake now.
- In a double broiler or in a small pot on low heat, add 1/3 cup heavy cream and 3/4 cup semi sweet chocolate chips. Stir frequently until melted and smooth.
- Pour chocolate mixture into baked pie crust and freeze for 20 minutes.
- While pie is in the freezer, in same chocolate pan add 1/2 cup of heavy cream & 3/4 cup semi sweet chocolate chips. Mix frequently until chocolate is melted and smooth. Allow to cool to room temperature. If in a hurry, pop into the fridge to cool quickly.
- In a separate bowl, beat 1 cup of heavy cream and vanilla until soft peaks form.
- Add cooled chocolate mixture to heavy cream and continue beating until thick, creamy and soft peaks form.
- Pour this second chocolate layer into pie crust and return to freezer for 20 more minutes.
- In another bowl mix 1 cup heavy cream with 1/4 cup powdered sugar. until stiff peaks form. Spread over Chocolate pie.
- Top with chocolate shavings or grated chocolate.
- Serve immediately or return to freezer.
- Remove from freezer and transfer to fridge 1 hour before serving.
Notes
For the second layer, I've skipped the whipped part and just melted the chocolate with all the heavy cream and that turned out delicious too! So don't panic if you mess it up. This pie is delicious no matter how you make it!
